Today, the Chicago Tribune reported that JB Pritzker used non-union workers during the renovation of his mansion. This is just the latest in a long line of hypocritical actions from Pritzker following union busting at Seadog Cruises and turning on the heat lamps on striking union workers.
In response, Governor Bruce Rauner issued the following statement:
“This is not surprising. Pritzker’s support of union workers is all talk – he’s a hypocrite. Pritzker has made it seem like he’s looking out for working people, but between this and his scheme to defraud hardworking taxpayers of $330,000, it’s clear he’s only looking out for himself.”

Billionaire Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker has portrayed himself as a champion of working families and received substantial support from organized labor, but he used nonunion workers to remodel his Gold Coast mansion.
Nonunion labor from three trades was hired to work on the yearslong, $25 million renovation of Pritzker’s 20,000-square-foot residence, according to a June 2007 email filed as part of a court dispute that arose between Pritzker and the general contractor.
“A note of caution,” wrote construction consultant Douglas Kaulas to Pritzker’s brother-in-law Thomas Muenster, who oversaw the renovation. “Now that the front yard is screened off and scaffold is going up, the jobsite has a much higher visibility. We’re perfectly legal with our permits, but we do have a non-union mason, demo contractor and roofer working. We are a little concerned that the union (business agents) may come to visit.” […]
“It’s important to finish the exterior work in the three months allotted by the scaffold contract so we can resume our lower profile,” wrote Kaulas, who also told Pritzker’s brother-in-law that “we’re putting a priority” on finishing the exterior work to both hold down scaffold rental costs and “to limit our visibility.”
As part of that renovation project, Kaulas occasionally met with Muenster and J.B. Pritzker to give updates.

Rauner exposed himself to new attention on his own union record—and the fact that not one major labor group in the state is backing him for re-election.
He conceded under questioning that he, too, has used nonunion labor in construction jobs on his own property. And he suggested, with a straight face, that he is the real pro-labor candidate in the race for governor.
Yes, he really did that: charge straight ahead without consulting with advisers and associates who might have urged him to be a little less risky. While attention on this issue won’t help Pritzker any, Rauner’s handling of it isn’t likely to help him much, either. In fact, it might hurt.
Call it a metaphor for much of Rauner’s tenure.

You can run a mediocre campaign against the worst Republican governor and most vulnerable incumbent, and still win.
These are fundamental errors. Fundamentals are always in fashion, no matter how campaigns change.
Oh, they mailed the check for the $330K.
What, for $207,000 a day, every day, that’s being spent, ya can’t just run it over, ala Jake and Elwood Blues, and get a receipt?
It won’t matter, probably, in “the end”, but gross malpractice to simple own oppo mistakes, in close “real” races where the opponent isn’t 20+ points under water… it’s a pattern in that campaign, we might see this pattern in the governing, or other campaigns after Pritzker.
It’s a red flag.

Union workers are not “in the tank” for JB Pritzker just like they are not “in the tank” for Mike Madigan.
Just as Tolkien wrote so long ago, sometimes foes band together because a higher evil appears. A larger threat looms. Sometimes dwarves and elves band together to take down Sauron.
It is also the case that the Unions recognize the greater evil of Illinois: Bruce Rauner. JB Pritzker and Mike Madigan are vessels to take him down while doing so on the cheap. No doubt had Daniel Biss or Chris Kennedy had won the primary, those campaigns would have asked for more than just door knocking - leaving little for down ballot races.
No, I think it is a safe bet that as soon as the votes are cast and everyone cheers the defeat of Rauner, the swords will be drawn, everyone will put their backs in a corner, and the Unions and Democrats will resume their bitter war over who should be following who.

No this will likely not change anything either, but it is OK to express displeasure with it and expect better. This was over a decade ago, but from the Blago tapes it was clear he was politically ambitious even back then. Sure doesn’t sound like his brother-in-law has been doing him any favors. Lastly, he sure seems able to get away with the “I wasn’t directly involved” defense in his personal and business affairs. Is this an excuse we can expect to have continue as Governor?

If Pritzker was running against any other GOP gubernatorial candidate of recent vintage, this and his family businesses labor practices would be a severe handicap.
But he’s not. He’s running againt Rauner, the dude whose sole discernible goal is to put unions out of business entirely.

Unless the polling has just changed Rauner’s attacks have been massive duds. He teed up an answer to a debate question about what Pritzker called African-American politicians, giving a long pause to say…offensive. I thought he was going to drop a bombshell, but it was all flatulence, no defecation.
I hope reporters ask Rauner questions about his anti-union record, like holding up budget negotiations because they didn’t have anti-union policies.

Welp, if this is how Pritzker will govern, lapsed attention to things that can be corrected, maybe “partial” homework done…

The best the Governor could do is divert some union members support of JB (though I doubt that is going to happen), but not even close to being enough to affect the outcome of the election. And the impact of the Governor attacking JB over this issue is muted by the fact that the Governor has solidly anti-union credentials himself. Everyone knows the Governor has an extreme dislike of unions and has actively worked towards breaking unions and paying lower wages.

Think about this for a moment. They are 22 days out - the time a losing campaign would normally drop the nuclear bomb - and their nuke is that three contractors who worked for a guy they fired were non-union? Is this what they had in that supposedly massive oppo book they bragged to Greg Hinz about over the summer?

Not just money, but a real “thing” to show a learned moment.
They made a choice as a campaign. Made a few.
This isn’t a close race, it won’t matter, maybe… but it highlights deficiencies in the campaign, a pattern of them too.

As a governor, Pritzker states his relationship and Illinois’ relationship with labor will be better with Pritzker as governor, versus the relationship labor has now with Rauner.

Rauner criticizing *anyone* else as it relates to support of union members is laughable.
As a union member I was lied to, coerced (unsuccessfully), subjected to misinformation and attempts to pit me against my union and other State employees *on State time using State resources*, and denied a contract…all by Rauner *in his capacity as Governor*.
There is nothing he can say now that will erase his 4-year record against collective bargaining.

if this were a state rep race, I’d say it makes a difference. I’ve seen union workers put up a sign for the Dem candidate and then the vote totals come and it seems the vote totals don’t match the many signs. but this is for a bigger pie to slice and workers know better. also, they know that it is often difficult to get union workers on small jobs at a home. I’ve had this discussion with union leaders….help those of us who want to hire union workers for a tiny job. isn’t there some way to coordinate that with workers who are off bigger jobs?

The Pritzker family removes all the toilets from the neighboring mansion and receives a roughly 85% decline in property tax assessments. The difference is made up by other property tax payers, including working families to the tune of roughly $330,000. No apologies offered. Pritzker’s response? He’s for working families. Honest.
Tribune reports today that all the masonry workers, roofers and laborers used in the main mansion rehab that ran over $25 million on Astor Street were non-union workers. Quick, work fast so they can take down the tell-tale scaffolding that such work is being performed. Later, the Pritzkers and the contractor get into a contractual beef over the $25 million restoration project. They sue each other and after a jury trial, the contractor is awarded by the jury the full amount due, all attorneys fees on behalf of the contractor and $1 million in interest. One million in interest? How much did he stiff the contractor to run up that amount of interest? Pritzker’s response? He’s for working families, honest.
He won’t define what he means by middle class. He won’t say what the progressive income tax proposal will represent or that it will take over two years from referendum to fruition, and the state will run further deficits in the process. He denies even thinking of imposing or raising other taxes. Pritzker’s response? He’s for working families. Honest.

Business groups endorse Rauner probably because he wants to weaken or cripple unions and wants RtW, local or otherwise. Also because Rauner wants to keep their taxes as low as possible (and seek cuts from workers) and drastic workers comp reform (much more than what Madigan offered).
It can’t be Rauner’s worse job numbers than Quinn that they support. It can’t be the tripling of the bill backlog, the exploding deficit, the $1 billion in interest on debt, vendors getting stuffed, severe cuts to higher ed, etc.

I think it’s great that Walker is giving away billions from Wisconsin to build the Foxx Conn facility so close to Illinois, personally. I hope every other surrounding state does the same thing.
As for no business groups endorsing JB, good.
