Polls

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

In case you’re wondering, I checked and at least some of the numbers in these polls appear to be outdated or otherwise not quite right.

The Coulson poll, for instance, appears to be a House Republican benchmark survey from August - long before the House Democrats began pouring in mail and troops.

Curiously, the head-to-head numbers published for that Coulson race don’t quite match up with what the Republicans had back then. Her opponent’s number is the same, but Coulson’s number is several points higher than the benchmark results. One top-level HGOP source claimed “the numbers were slightly modified in some instances,” (on their end, not on Arch’s).

When asked what the heck that meant, the Repub source said, “Let’s just say, the margin of error would be 9-10%, instead of 5%.”

Take it for what it’s worth.

Way to go Devin!!!!

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

Results of the Illinois Press Association statewide newspaper competition:

Division A (weeklies with under 3,000 circulation), best in state: Carterville Courier.

The Courier just happens to be owned by my youngest brother, Devin Miller. So, please allow me a personal aside here.

Congratulations, Devin!!!

Scorecard

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

Sun-Times scorecard since they broke the “Hired Truck” scandal story in January:

Arrests: Three city employees — Angelo Torres, ex-gang member who ran the Hired Truck Program; Gerald Wesolowski, a high-ranking Water Department official accused of being a bagman, and John Boyle, an engineer for the Transportation Department accused of taking more than $150,000 in bribes. One trucking company owner is also accused of lying about alleged bribe.

Resignation: Bill Abolt, director of the mayor’s budget office that oversees the Hired Truck Program.

And it’s not nearly over. In next week’s Capitol Fax, we’ll talk about the impact of this ever-growing scandal on some key political races. Stay tuned.

The Latino Gap

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

Remember all the trouble the governor has had with Latino legislators? They’ve publicly criticized him on numerous occasions for not hiring enough Latinos. He appointed a Latino chaiman of the reconstituted State Board of Education and Sen. Miguel del Valle, who chairs the Senate Education Committee, just shrugged and said it was a good start.

Well, here’s another Latino hire:

CHICAGO – Governor Rod Blagojevich today named Gerardo Cardenas as his new Chicago Press Secretary, the first Latino to hold this position.  Cardenas is a trilingual journalist with 20 years of experience, including over 13 years as a foreign correspondent for an international wire service in Mexico and Europe.  He comes to the Governor’s Office from Hoy Newspaper, a Chicago Tribune Spanish publication where he served as Assignment Editor for the last three years. Cardenas will be responsible for press relations for both Chicago mainstream media and the Hispanic media.  He is filling the position that has been vacant since Abby Ottenhoff moved into the position of Deputy Director of Communications last May.

Quote of the Week

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

I love this one. From the Quincy Herald-Whig:

[Rep. Art] Tenhouse said Blagojevich even shows his lack of knowledge about agriculture when he tries to do something nice. Blagojevich bought a champion steer at the state fair and then joked he might have to keep the animal at his mansion in Springfield “since nobody else is using it” while Blagojevich lives in Chicago.

“That steer is still out in a pasture somewhere. He has not been slaughtered. The governor may think he can breed that steer,” Tenhouse said, bringing a round of laughter from those in the restaurant.

For you city folk, steers are, um, purposely deprived of the ability to reproduce.

Danger, Will Robinson

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

This is posted prominently at Rep. Michael McAuliffe’s website:

BEWARE!

Negative Campaigning by Michael McAuliffe’s opponent has begun. Inaccurate and misleading accusations are being made. Don’t believe an opponent that has nothing good to say about himself.

More about this in Tuesday’s Capitol Fax.

Nothing new here…

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

Just in case you still care, the latest US Senate poll shows (surprise!) a total blowout.

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows Democrat Barack Obama holding a 64% to 20% lead over Republican Alan Keyes. The survey was commissioned by the Daily Southtown.

Just 46% of Republicans in the state plan to vote for their own party’s nominee. Eight percent (8%) of Republicans say they will not cast a vote in the Senate race.

Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Illinois voters have a favorable opinion of Barack Obama. Forty-two percent (42%) of voters describe the rising Democratic star as liberal while 34% describe him as mainstream.

For Keyes, 33% have a favorable opinion. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say he is an extremist and another 14% describe him as divisive. Just 7% say Keyes is in the political mainstream.

Overall, 59% of Illinois voters have an unfavorable opinion of Keyes including 39% who say they have a “very” unfavorable opinion of him.

“Divorce Proceedings”

Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller

For background on today’s Quinn story, click here and read the AP’s piece on Quinn’s public reaction to the governor’s tollway reforms.

This newspaper column argues on behalf of Quinn’s tollway reform ideas.

This article talks about how environmentalists were “stunned” by the IEPA’s decision not to review its regulations on coal-fired power plants.
