Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller While I’m waiting on a couple of phonecalls, I figured I’d post Alan Keyes’ weekend schedule, just on the outside chance that you might possibly be interested in what the Maryland Mouth is up to:

Polls
Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller In case you’re wondering, I checked and at least some of the numbers in these polls appear to be outdated or otherwise not quite right. The Coulson poll, for instance, appears to be a House Republican benchmark survey from August - long before the House Democrats began pouring in mail and troops. Curiously, the head-to-head numbers published for that Coulson race don’t quite match up with what the Republicans had back then. Her opponent’s number is the same, but Coulson’s number is several points higher than the benchmark results. One top-level HGOP source claimed “the numbers were slightly modified in some instances,” (on their end, not on Arch’s). When asked what the heck that meant, the Repub source said, “Let’s just say, the margin of error would be 9-10%, instead of 5%.” Take it for what it’s worth.

The Latino Gap
Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller Remember all the trouble the governor has had with Latino legislators? They’ve publicly criticized him on numerous occasions for not hiring enough Latinos. He appointed a Latino chaiman of the reconstituted State Board of Education and Sen. Miguel del Valle, who chairs the Senate Education Committee, just shrugged and said it was a good start. Well, here’s another Latino hire: CHICAGO – Governor Rod Blagojevich today named Gerardo Cardenas as his new Chicago Press Secretary, the first Latino to hold this position.  Cardenas is a trilingual journalist with 20 years of experience, including over 13 years as a foreign correspondent for an international wire service in Mexico and Europe.  He comes to the Governor’s Office from Hoy Newspaper, a Chicago Tribune Spanish publication where he served as Assignment Editor for the last three years. Cardenas will be responsible for press relations for both Chicago mainstream media and the Hispanic media.  He is filling the position that has been vacant since Abby Ottenhoff moved into the position of Deputy Director of Communications last May.

Quote of the Week
Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller I love this one. From the Quincy Herald-Whig: [Rep. Art] Tenhouse said Blagojevich even shows his lack of knowledge about agriculture when he tries to do something nice. Blagojevich bought a champion steer at the state fair and then joked he might have to keep the animal at his mansion in Springfield “since nobody else is using it” while Blagojevich lives in Chicago. For you city folk, steers are, um, purposely deprived of the ability to reproduce.

“Divorce Proceedings”
Friday, Oct 8, 2004 - Posted by Rich Miller For background on today’s Quinn story, click here and read the AP’s piece on Quinn’s public reaction to the governor’s tollway reforms. This newspaper column argues on behalf of Quinn’s tollway reform ideas. This article talks about how environmentalists were “stunned” by the IEPA’s decision not to review its regulations on coal-fired power plants.
